drunkenness and to instill a sober mind.
Amethyst is found in geodes or alluvial
deposits, predominantly from Brazil
and Uruguay. It is also found in the
USA, Madagascar, the former Soviet
Union, India, Australia, South Africa
and many other countries. Once a
highly prized stone, amethyst's value
fell sharply with the discovery of the
large deposits in Brazil and Uruguay in
the late 19th century. The color is
typically a deep violet purple but can
appear paler. The color is the result of
trace amounts of iron in the crystal
structure. Amethyst is considered to
have a calming effect and to enhance
the meditative state. It has been
imitated by glass and synthetic
corundum.
