I began working with wire and beads after moving to Arkansas 15 years ago. I love working with wire—it invites so many possibilities. In recent times I have been pulled in a more organic direction in both my materials and design. I am fascinated with beads. For quite some time I focused on transparent glass beads, especially handmade beads from India.
I have always been drawn to intricate handmade items. Lovely heirloom sewing, elaborate embroidery, and beaded clothing and accessories from the Far East have been my influences, as well as my time spent living in France. In the last 10 years I have been drawn to bold colors and striking color combinations.
As a young girl drew designs for dresses and sewed Barbie clothes by hand. I picked up the Coates and Clark How To book at some point and taught myself to knit, crochet, and embroider, with a little help from my mother. The one skill that eluded me was tatting...I'll get to it eventually!!! The point is that I've always made things. These days I'm more likely to build a new piece of furniture than to crochet a doily, but I still do love handwork.
I always assumed that I would find my place in life resulting from my traditional academic studies. But I've realized that making things is what I was put here to do--and the inspiration that drives that is what connects me at the deepest level to the universe. This compulsion to make things is just in me: I can unfold it any time I like.
My favorite definition of inspiration is the breathing in of spirit, or divine breath
